My name is Pamela (Parker)Venable. Your web site has been such a blessing. I was born in Cumberland in '49 at my Mamaw's house but raised in Lynch. Have many wonderful childhood memories from there. My Dad was a coal miner and also both grandfathers. I was 13 when we moved to Florida...what a change that was..like when Dorothy said to Toto...I don't think we're in Kansas anymore. I will treasure my innocent memories from there forever. If anyone remembers me, please write. God Bless.

Hi, I'm Willie Marie. Anyone out there remembers me from Lynch, KY. I was fortunate enough to attend both schools, Lynch West Main and East Main (got to see both sides of the coin). Get memories about that coal mining town. Discovered this site and thought "what a wonderful way to reconnect with old friends". Like Angela said, Lynch was a great place to be raised as a child. People today say it takes a village to raise a child, that statement was so true in the town of Lynch. Boy did we ever learn to respect adults! I've taught my kids and now my grand children the same ideals we learned as children. Love you all.

My father was from Lynch, kentucky. I am searching for the old family farm house it would have belonged to William Riley and Margaret Gilley. My dad was Gillis Gilley, son of Fuller and Edna Gilley. I am also looking for their grave sites as well if anyone has any information to give. My grandmother Edna died in 1943. All the kids remember about her funeral was walking over a bridge to get to the cemetary, and the grave of course is unmarked. If anyone familiar with the area has any ideas please contact me at melndaj4427@yahoo.com

I recently visited Lynch. What a beautiful town. I met the most gracious people including Bob Lunsford and George Jakopovich who provided me information about Portal 31 and shared their life experiences. I also dined with my family at Miner's Market and had the best home cooked meal in a while that consisted of Fried Chicken, cornbread, sauerkraut ever. I was served by Sheila Nease who provided the best Southern Hospitality one could ever find in a little town. One should definitely travel through Lynch, Benham and Kingdom Come Park to meet Kentucky's people and enjoy pure life.

My name is John A. McCarthy I was born in Lynch Kentucky in July 24,1934. My parents were John J.McCarthy, and Susie Drobnak McCarthy. I had three sisters and a brother, they were Agnes, Kathleen, Patrick, and Patricia. I graduated from Lynch High in 1951. My dad worked for the company for 41 years, mostly in the lamp houses. He got to were he could see someone coming and have his check number and lamp ready when he got to the window. I live in Danville Indiana now, but wish I could have found a job at the mines when I got my discharge from the Navy in July 1957. I loved lynch more than any place I have ever lived. That includes Flordia, Michigan and Illinois. Those mountains are beautiful. I laugh at the drivers up here that can't drive on a curvy road. I learned to drive on Black Mountain, and we used to go up to the top and go out to the fire tower and camp out. That was before they brought the bears in. I have friends in Gap Branch who say the bears come down and get into thier garbage cans. I used to live on Liberty street along with Ballard Pendelton, The Rooks family, the Shelby Howard family, the Ballous, TheBecklers, the Marus Family, The Guryans, the Baxters, The Letanoskys, The Morgans, the Funichs, The Dominguezs, the Adams, The Hoggs, The Monhollins, the Kralevichs, the Guverichs, the Wards and a couple of families I didn't know. I had friends on high street, Church Street, Main street Y Street, Short street and #3 #4 #6 and #1, and Gap Branch. I remember when us guys would get together in the field beetween the Cathoic church and the hotel and play what ever ball was in season, In the winter when it snowed we would block off the hotel hill road, get a 55 gal barrel and build a fire in it when we got enough snow to sled on. It was a nice ride down the hill, but,a slow walk back up. We got our chores done before we got to go play, but we expected it. When our parents wanted us home, they went out on the porch and yelled our names. If they used our first middle and last names we knew we had better scoot because we were in trouble, and, there was no telling them we didn't hear them. The strange part of our lives was, if any of our neighbors saw us into mischief they could repremand us as well as our parents and not get in trouble for it. If you got in trouble at school your parents knew about it before you got home. Then you would be in trouble again. We were all afraid of that big wide miners belt our dads had.

John A. McCarthy

They had 3 children in Lynch, Richard, Doris and my mother Lilly. I pass through Lynch almost every year and try to identify things I've 'heard tell' about. Is there a city hall or hall of records where I can try to trace some history? My grandma ran a boarding house on Gap Branch, I think it may have been where the empty lot is now, right across the RR and creek.

I enjoyed your website. Sure looks like a beautiful / peaceful place to live. You certainly are an authentic part of American history that too many know too little about. Love the ride from Lynch to Big Stone Gap.

Hope to hear from you...thanks...Dick

I came across this site after being in a nostalgic mood one day. I have wonderful memories of weeks spent at Granny and Grandpa Booth's house in Lynch each summer - late 60's - early 70's. Times spent at the country club pool and golf course, the library, the creek and railroad tracks, hiking in the mountains, picnics at Kingdom Come Park (what was the name of the restaurant right at the foot of the entrance to the park?), stopping for 'frozen custard', buying banana popsicles from the 'house store' up the street, Sunday School at the Methodist church, playing in Granpa's yard until we got fussed at for messing up his flowers, writing my friends all through the year until we were together again the next summer... What fun!!

I've been back to Harlan County several times since then for funerals of grandparents from Cumberland. Things look differnet, yet the same. Would love to know how everybody is these days.

I was in Dungannon,VA attending a funeral in May of this year. I had forgotton how scary that trip over the Black Mtn. from VA to Lynch could be. Lynch certainly has changed since the last time I was there. The houses look a whole lot better now than they did when U.S. Steel owned them. Where did all the outhouse/coal bins go? It's really sad that the two school buildings are in such bad shape. My father worked in Lynch mines for many years. My mom worked as a waitress in the little restaurant run by Harlas & Jackie Roberts, in the far end of the "Big" store. I used to go to the dances at the Teen Center in Benham on Friday evenings. We lived in Cumberland, actually Clutts, before moving to Lynch. I went to Lynch East Main school from 1955 thru 1964. I am looking for a yearbook for 1962, 1963 or 1964. If anyone knows of one for sale, please let me know.

My name is Elaine "Howard" Adkins my memories are deep rooted. Lynch offered so much to a child growing up. There wasn't need for computer games or expensive toys we had it all in our backyard. The creek bank was a great place for games like hide and seek, army games(of course my sister and I were the nurses) and playing kick the can. Because my family grew up in #1 we walked down the block to an absolutely wonderful Baptist Church. My most vivid memories always includes my sisters Sheila and Cassandra. Cassandra being next to the oldest always helped entertain Shelia and me. We long picnics with her and June and Donna Roberts on the creek banks. My most favorite memory, though, is walking the railroad track with my Granny Price to her church on Sunday Morning in Cumberland. Even though it has been many years since my return I tell my husband you can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl. Take you for reliving my memories and touching my roots.

Comments:
I was born in Lynch, and my father and mother were James William & Buelah Lee Powell. Iam the 3rd son of 6 children, James William, Larry Wayne, Gary Wayland, Barry Wade, Mary Margaret, & Lisa Marie Powell. Since the passing of our parents, the children have scattered to the four winds so to speak. From Lexington, Ky, to Indianapolis, IN, to Escanaba, MI, to Fayettevelle/Fort Bragg, NC, to Homossa Springs, FL, and finally Santa Anna, TX. Our endeavors, opportunities, spouses, and families have taken us to many places and cover a broad aspect of life experiences. The boys have all served their country honorably, with two, Larry and Gary retiring from the Army after obtaining the highest enlisted rank achievable. We were, and still are serving our Country proudly in Support of Our Troops near and far. Our familys will be visiting Lynch over the 1st weekend of October 2007 for a small family reunion where we hope to visit and will be remising about many of our childhood favorite places and events that were special in our lives. We are all looking forward to the trip, and who says "You Can Never Go Home Again" is just wrong.

There is a posting here by Tammy Reynolds Valdez who mentioned that she was in Lynch one time visiting a friend named Christine Young, in about 1970. I knew Chris also, we were friends at U. of Kentucky. We went to Lynch for Easter weekend, I guess it was about 1976. It was fascinating to be in a company town, see the company store, etc....At a party of young people that night, they were all taking about the different company houses they had lived in. As their fathers moved up the ladder in the company, you literally moved up the mountain into a better house....just like a pyramid organizational chart! Her father had worked his way up the mountain to the top house, just beneath the Country Club. It was a lot of fun, beautiful views, and it was the first time I ever had moonshine.... but I'll stick with scotch, thanks!

I'll be coming through Lynch late afternoon on August 20th hoping to see where my father (Charles W. Powell) was born. His parents were Milton Wright Powell & Ina O. Powell and I know Milton (who was born in Trenton, GA) worked in the mine in 1935 when my father was born. My fathers Record of Birth shows an address of 621 ? I believe those were tough times for miners and their families. I'm hoping to gain some appreciation of my roots. Is there a visitors center or a library that may shed some light on those times? I wouldn't know if I have any family in town or not. Any suggestions on a place to eat while I'm there? Thank you in advance for anything you can share with me.
David Powell

Hello
My name is Tammy (Reynolds) Valdez. I am not from Lynch but I visited there once when I was 12. What a beautiful place! I was invited to stay with a friend for about a month (this was about 1970). We spent most of our time at a pool at the country club? I remember Coors Beer was a pretty hot commodity and it rained every day at 1pm :) Anyway - the friends name was Christine Young and her Dad's name (I think) was John. That was a long time ago but I sure would like to get in touch with her and say Hi! If anyone knows how I can do that please email me. Tammy Valdez tamjay40@msn.com

Hello to all the Lynch, Kentucky citizens and former citizens. My name is Becky Hollin Brown. My father is Bill (Billy) Hollin-the graduated Lynch Bulldog from the golden years of the Bulldog team. I am in search of pictures form this time. I believe the football coach was Coach Potter. I have heard many stories of Pig Allen and Coach Potter from my Father. We are having our family reunion this summer in London, Ky and need the pictures for a memory "yearbook" my sister and I are putting together. Also, if you went to school with any of the Hollin brothers and cousins any pictures from these years would be appreciated. My email is rnb4kids@comcast.net. If you could contact me. I would be happy to take the pictures and get copies and send them back to you. Thank you and thank you Lynch Bulldogs for all the stories Daddy has entertained us kids with all these years.

Gerald, Thank you.. The site looks great. The photo on the right of the opening page is my old street, Gap Branch. I crossed the creek and RR many times at lunchtime. For a few years I crawled through or under the train but eventually when I got desperate, I crossed under the creek bridge. My father lived in Lynch from 1926-58, all but 5 years in Gap Branch and I graduated from LHS in 1949. I have been to the last three Bulldog Homecomings. Bob and Wanda Lunsford are friends from way back

Hello Lynch Kentucky,
My name is Gay (Watts) Hollin. I attended Lynch High from 7th grade through 12th grade, graduated in 1953. And don’t think I could have received a better education any where else than I did at Lynch High. I married a local resident and graduate from Lynch,( and a Bull Dog )Robert Hollin. I had some wonderful times during my high school years, and my best friend in high school still lives in Lynch, Cleo (Patterson) Webb. My son Robert Hollin introduced me to your web site and played the fight song over the phone to me. I loved reading the guest book, nice to recognize some names. My beloved teacher through high school was Mrs. Cross. I’m happy to see there is a Bull Dog reunion each year.

My name is Robert Brown, I went to live with my mother in 1939. She ran the McCarry Boarding on main street, which was across from the old Lynch Hospital.I went to Lynch High School Untill I was drafted in early 1945. I did not appear on the Graduating list untill I returned from service in 1947. Some of the people I remember from my highschool days at Lynch, were Jack Moore and his wife Lois Mills,

Joe Gyuran and His sister Annie. Some of the others I remember was Joe Hollingsworth and His brother Glen. Wanda Manning, Helen Obradavich, George Ely and his wife Ramona Booth and her sister Val Doris. Course everybody remembers Henly L Cash who was School Principle, also Professor Smith and His wife Ann Smith who taught world and American History. I played some football, Mostly as a 3rd team scrub. The coach was Kennedy who also taught Science. I could go on for quite a while about my time In Lynch, but I feel I have ran on enough.

I visited Lynch with my kids and their kids in July and showed them the house where I was born. It looks a lot better now than when I lived there. Shows you what ownership does for the person living there.

I returned to Lynch in Oct for the Bulldog Homecoming along with two sisters. Had a great time, a good crowd and Johnny Coppinger was really active. I hope I can twirl the ladies like he did when I get to be his age. And still sing the school song and march too. Pat Rice Day really pushed him along. Good to see the Lewis girls from Gap Branch.

MY wife, three of our four children and 5 of their children will be visiting KY in July. The children were born in Lexington and they want to see their old home place. They also want to see Pike County and Hazard where my wife lived and Lynch where I graduated in 1949. My wife and I attended the Bulldog Reunion in Oct 2005 and had a great time. My old house in Gap Branch is still occupied and in good condition. It really brings up some old memories to see some of the places in Lynch. I really support the efforts to open Portal 31, the Depot and other places that have a historical and personal relationship. My Gold and White jacket is still in great shape and ready to make the trip. I sent an email to the Nashville TV station critizing the poor reporting in their news report in Jan 2006. I had seen a video of that report.

Hello! Lynch My Name is Angela Smith-Ward, born and raised in Lynch Kentucky. I thank God for Lynch and the Southern hospitality that Lynch has instilled in me as an adult. My mother is Ann Allen, who still lives in Lynch. Lynch is the greatest place in the world, not because I was born and raised there, because of the strength that it has taken to survive through the good times and bad times. I have been many places and seen many faces, there's no place like home and that's Lynch Kentucky. The people are always the same when you meet them, whether it's in Lynch or outside of Lynch. That Southern hospitality goes a long way. Lynch will always be dear to my heart, no matter where I go or live. Lynch will always be home to me. There is no other place like Lynch Kentucky. I Truly thank Lynch for the making me the person that I am today. Thank God for Lynch. Home of the Lynch Bulldogs. Gold and White School Colors. I LOVE LYNCH!!!! Angela
